St. Lawrence Boy Scout Troop 302 has lost a great friend
and leader. Eagle Scout Mr. David Hecker died during surgery
on Monday August 15th in Dayton, Ohio. Mr. Hecker had been
involved in scouting for 43 years as a youth and as an adult
leader of troops in Dayton and Cincinnati. He had been awarded
the Bronze Pelican and the St. George Emblems by the
Archdiocese of Cincinnati for his work in Scouting as Youth
Ministry. He had received the District of Award of Merit in
Scouting and the Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow. He and
Mr. Bill Aufermann met as Cub Scouts in Pack 2 of St. Henry
Parish in Dayton, Ohio and sustained a friendship for 43
years. Twenty years ago when Bill needed help with Troop 282
in Cincinnati, David volunteered to drive from Dayton each
week to help out. David always said that he had a great time
in scouts as a boy and appreciated the men that gave of their
time and energy to see that he and others had that
opportunity. David felt that giving back by serving as a
trained leader was a way to honor those men and provide
similar experiences to other boys. Twelve years ago, he joined
the Cub Scout Pack 302 committee. Eight years ago he joined
Troop 302 as the Advancement Chair and saw three young men
achieve Eagle rank with four others currently at Life rank and
working toward Eagle. We thank Mr. Dan Re, Mr. Terry
Aufermann, and Mr. Brett Baker for working toward getting
trained to fill the void left by David’s death. Please
remember David and his family in your prayers.
